81 Pics is a collection of Zachary Jordan Penney’s drawings from Dec ’09 til May ’10. It provides eighty-one vignettes from a cartooned world of characters and symbols, navigating a territory somewhere between satire and surrealism. The characters inhabiting his world are simultaneously exuberant and disgusting, symbolically familiar in content but self-sufficiently perverse, all framed in the lewd confines of pink A4 copy paper. Packs of depraved hounds roam for pot. Genitals mock each other and embrace their sexual dysfunctions. Aliens and wrestlers dance around police cars and crucifixes, while familiar characters derived from popular television worlds are manipulated into giggling and grotesque parodies of their former selves. What results is an esoteric and exaggerated depiction of human obsession and voyeurism that invites viewing as much as it does nauseate and repel.
